Timeline

August - October 2023

The Problem

SPRY is a family and friends health tracking app. The purpose of the app is to allow users within a group (family or friends) to see how others are doing regarding their health and fitness

SPRY is looking to integrate messaging into the app. The goal is to create sustained engagement.

The Solution

The purpose of the app is to connect with others using the app. By integrating messaging, having the ability to invite others to workouts and to share goalas will lead to continued use.

User Persona

Secondary Research

For my secondary research, I looked into the relationship between Health & Fitness in regards to social media and messaging

There is a positive impact of sharing progress and success within an individual’s own community. Social media has totally changed the way health and fitness has been perceived previously. Now people can find inspiration, learn and connect with others on their fitness journey.

“In a report published in 2020, the audience is relative to sharing goals and achievements. If they are shared with someone whose opinion is valued, people are motivated to follow through on future goals and achievements.”

Design Process

Figuring out the most common flows for the user was difficult.

The 3 flows I ended up choosing were:

1. Viewing Messages

2. Sending a Goal

3. Sharing a Workout

The main purpose of this new feature is to create sustained engagement and usage of the app so the three flows are situations that would increase usage by the users.

Low Fidelity Designs

Using previous screens as a guideline to figure out how to integrate a messaging feature into the app.

Usability Testing

From the first round of testing, the main takeaway was to fix the messaging feature since most testers had concerns about how the feature would be properly used.

High Fidelity Designs

Usability Testing #2

From the second round of testing, the main concern was the way the predetermined messages were shown as an option for users. Another concern was making the experience of sharing a goal more enjoyable for the user

Reflections

1. I found it really interesting that this capstone gave the assignment of adding a new feature instead of starting from a new idea. It takes a lot of work to figure out how to smoothly integrate something new when you weren’t there from the beginning of the conception of the app.

2. For someone who is not super athletic, it was interesting to work on a project where I don’t have a strong interest of knowledge of the topic. This leads to me wishing I could have done more research on competitor apps that could give me a more rounded view of fitness/health apps.

3. Again, I feel this way with all projects but I would have loved to have more time to work on everything. Having a timeline was a very good thing for me while working on this but there was some sort of time restraint for this project so at certain points I definitely felt the pressure.
